It is important to ensure you act professionally and leave a good impression. The more you impress, the better chance you’ll have of securing the job you want. Keep in mind, there are no sure ways to guarantee that you get the job you want, but there are strategies and techniques that can increase your chances.
10 tips to help you focus and obtain your next IT role:
1. Tailor your CV
It might be time consuming to tailor your CV for every job you apply for but it will be well worth your efforts.
Do some research about the company. It will impress the interviewer if you mention something like: “I noticed the company won an award for…” showing them that you are interested in the company and have spent time preparing for the interview.
3. Practice, practice, practice
Always practice ahead of an interview! It will help you feel more confident and equipped for any question. Try getting your friends to help you with some interview questions like: “tell me about yourself”, this is your chance to promote your skills, experience and background.
4. Gaps in your CV
If there is something that stands out on your CV, you are guaranteed to be asked about it. Make sure you know your CV inside and out before you are in the interview. E.g, if you have gaps in your CV, make sure to include these dates on your CV and be prepared to discuss.
5. Dress smart
Dressing professionally and appropriately is a MUST for any job interview. Even if the company has a relaxed dress code, you want to look your best (dress to impress) and make a good first impression, as you only get one chance to do so.
6. Arrive early
Try to get to the interview at least 15 minutes beforehand. It shows you are eager to get the job and also punctual. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to find it and you don’t arrive stressed or flustered.
7. Body language and eye contact
Throughout the interview, try to keep open and friendly body language. Avoid crossing arms or legs, sit up straight and lean towards the interviewer. Smile and don’t be afraid to make solid eye contact. Eye contact shows a lot about the person and is one of the most important non-verbal ways of communicating during an interview.
8. Show enthusiasm
Employers want to hire people who are keen and eager to work hard and become a solid member of their team. If you show enthusiasm throughout the interview, this will leave a positive and lasting impression.
9. Ask the right questions
At most interviews you will be given the chance to ask your own questions. This is a good opportunity to find out exactly what the interviewer is looking for. This way, you can then adapt your answers to meet their needs and become the ideal candidate.
10. After the interview
Once the interview is over, stand up straight, thank the interviewer for their time, give a firm handshake, make direct eye contact and smile. Say that you’ll look forward to hearing from them. Then follow up with a thank-you email or letter.
